Licensing Requirements

License Requirements
The qualifications for the California Real Estate Salesperson license are outlined below. For more specifics on whether you qualify to take this exam, visit the California Department of Real Estate web site, www.dre.ca.gov.

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have legal presence in US as defined by the California Department of Real Estate.
  • Have two years full time experience as a real estate salesperson, or hold a Bachelor's degree in any subject area, or be a member of any state bar association.
  • Complete the educational requirements outlined by the California Department of Real Estate. Click here to for more information.

There is one exception to the coursework requirements for the broker license. Members of the CA state bar have met their educational requirements and can apply directly for the licensing exam. Members of any other state bar must complete two home study courses. Call the Real Estate Centre at 310-410-9718 for the details.


Required Courses

Required Courses
To qualify to take the real estate salesperson license exam, you must complete the five college required courses listed below, along with three electives.

  • Real Estate Practice (required)
    Real Estate Practice helps students understand the day-to-day practice of real estate. It includes a review of important laws and forms commonly used in the industry. To enroll, click here.

  • Legal Aspects of Real Estate (required)
    Legal Aspects of Real Estate provides students with detailed information about legal concepts related to real estate, including real property laws, agency relationships, and contracts. To enroll, click here.
  • Real Estate Finance (required)
    Real Estate Finance is a simple guide to understanding the real estate finance and money markets, laws related to lending, and loan processing. To enroll, click here.

  • Real Estate Appraisal (required)
    Real Estate Appraisal provides an overview of the principles of appraisal, including data collection, valuation, math, and report preparation. To enroll, click here.

  • Real Estate Economics (required)
    Real Estate Economics is a comprehensive guide to economics as it applies to real estate. It includes a review of historical trends and their influence on real estate values, along with detailed discussions of the relationship of costs and values in the real estate industry.   • Real Estate Principles (elective)
    Real Estate Principles provides students with an overview of important real estate concepts, terminology, and legal definitions. To enroll, click here.
  • Mortgage Loan Brokering and Lending (elective)
    Mortgage Loan Brokering and Lending includes a review of legal requirements related to loan brokering, fair lending practices, and trust fund management. As an extra bonus, the book incorporates practical advice from an expert mortgage broker. To enroll, click here.

  • Property Management (elective)
    Property Management offers a wealth of information for students interested in managing residential and/or commercial properties. To enroll, click here.

Final Exams
Along with each course, you are required to complete a final exam. All final exams are taken online and are open book. Each final has 100 multiple choice questions; you are allowed 2.5 hours to complete the exam and a score of at least 60% is required to pass.

The Department of Real Estate requires specific waiting periods between the time you enroll in a course and when you are eligible to take the final exam. After you receive your textbook, you must wait at least 18 calendar days before taking the final exam. The 18 day waiting period is a minimum; once you go beyond the 18 days, you can take the final exam any time within one year of the enrolling. When you're ready to take your final exam, you can contact The Real Estate Centre and we will send you a password to unlock your final exam.
