Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.

How to I get a real estate salesperson license?
First, you need to complete three college level courses (real estate principles, real estate practice, and one elective). Once you’ve completed the required courses, you’ll apply for the licensing exam, take it, pass (with the help of our exam prep course) and find fame and fortune in real estate.

You’ll also want to apply for the sales exam. You can find the application on the DRE website at www.dre.ca.gov/Examinees/ApplySalesperson.html.

Can I use college classes to meet any of the requirements for the salesperson license?
If you took Real Estate Principles, or Real Estate Practice you can certainly use them. Similarly, if you completed an economics, accounting, or business law class in college, you can use any one of these classes meet the elective requirement. Just be sure the courses you’ve taken were completed at an accredited school in the US.

I took courses at a university in another country; can I use them to meet the requirements? Possibly, but you’ll need to have your transcripts evaluated by a credentialing service chosen by the Department of Real Estate. How long is my real estate salesperson’s license valid?
The DRE issues licenses for four years. At the end of that period you need to complete continuing education requirements to renew your license for another four years.
